We arrive for his eye exam in the early morning , he starts of with exam from the technician and then a field test. Afterwards Dr Gold enters the room! Dr Gold is one of the funniest doctor we know. Dalen and Dr Gold has an amazing friendship. They talk, tell funny stories, and tell jokes throughout the exam.
Dalen asks his big question "Doc I'm taking drivers training and want to know if I can get my drivers permit?" I immediately put my head down. I know the answer but I did not want it to be true. I was hoping for my doubts to be wrong. However Dr. Gold replied "Dalen, I have to be totally honest with you; just like I always have been. Dalen you won't be able drive man." Dalen head drop with disappointment. I really wanted to tell Dalen how I felt but I just couldn't break his heart.
After all the test were done, Dr Gold informed Dalen and I that his field test showed a drastic decrease in his peripheral view in both eyes over the last six months. He is still able to see about a good fifteen to twenty feet straight forward. Dalen can comfortable read font size 30 on his computer screen.
As we were leaving the office Dr Gold yelled "Dalen man be good to your mom. Don't drive her crazy!" Dalen replied with the funniest grin ever "Doc remember you said I can't drive." We all burst in laughter. Although Dalen was told he wouldn't be able to drive; he didn't let this news have him down to long. Dalen had already thought of alternatives for him to get around. "Mama I need a Uber account!"
Sometimes it's hard to explain to friends, family, and teachers what Dalen is going through. Not only is he fighting brain tumors with chemotherapy treatments but he is losing his vision also.
